This event refers to a famous episode in early Islamic history known in Arabic as Hadith al-Ifk (the Incident of the Slander).

The Background of the Incident

During an expedition (typically identified as the Return from the Raid on Banu Mustaliq), the Muslim army camped for the night. Aisha, the Prophet Muhammad's wife, had stepped away from her camel litter to search for a lost necklace. While she was away, the camp packed up and departed; because she was lightweight and traveling inside a covered litter, the men carrying it did not realize she was missing.

Left behind in the desert camp, Aisha stayed put, expecting them to notice her absence and return. Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, a companion who had lagged behind the main army for duties, came across her sleeping in the morning. Recognizing her, he brought her back to the army on his camel.

The Slander and Its Aftermath

When the army returned to Medina, malicious rumors began to spread—fuelled in part by political figures like Abdullah ibn Ubayy—claiming that Aisha and Safwan had committed misconduct.

  • The Severity of the Accusation: Under traditional strict legal interpretations in Islamic jurisprudence, an accusation of unlawful sexual intercourse requires four eyewitnesses. Unfounded public accusations of this nature constitute severe slander (qadhF), which carries heavy legal penalties, while the punishment for proven adultery within traditional strict law was severe.

  • The Resolution: The slander caused immense distress to Aisha and the Prophet Muhammad for about a month, during which time normal life and revelations temporarily halted. Eventually, according to Islamic tradition, verses of Surah An-Nur (Quran 24:11–20) were revealed declaring Aisha's complete innocence, condemning the rumor as a fabricated slander, and establishing formal legal requirements for handling such accusations.
