From the persistent cultural caricature of the "dumb blonde" to assumptions about redheads and brunettes, society has long attempted to link melanin in hair follicles with mental acuity. However, when modern behavioral science and large-scale data analytics finally put these old stereotypes to the test, the results completely upended conventional folklore.

The Origins of Cognitive Stereotypes

Human beings possess an inherent psychological drive to categorize one another. By relying on superficial traits—such as eye color, height, or hair pigmentation—people often construct fast assumptions regarding an individual's personality, competence, or potential. The "dumb blonde" trope, popularized by mid-century cinema and mass media, cemented the false narrative that women with lighter hair relied purely on aesthetic appeal rather than intellectual depth. To definitively measure whether any correlation exists between hair color and cognitive scoring, researchers have turned to empirical data.
