Are Babies Born with PDA?

Yes, in a way, all babies are born with a small blood vessel called the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), but it’s a normal part of fetal development. This vessel connects two major blood vessels—the aorta and the pulmonary artery—and plays a crucial role before birth by helping blood bypass the lungs, which aren’t yet in use.

Normally, within the first few days after birth, this passage closes as the baby starts breathing air and the circulatory system adapts to life outside the womb. In most newborns with healthy hearts, the PDA seals shut without any medical intervention. It’s a natural transition, and parents usually don’t even notice it happening.

However, in some cases—especially among premature babies—the ductus arteriosus remains open longer than it should. When this happens, extra blood can flow into the lungs, making the heart work harder and potentially leading to breathing difficulties, poor growth, or other complications. This condition is still referred to as PDA, and while it’s not uncommon, it does require monitoring and sometimes treatment.

Treatment depends on the baby’s age, size, and overall health. In mild cases, doctors may simply wait and observe. In others, medications, catheter procedures, or even surgery may be needed to close the vessel safely.

The good news is that when PDA is detected early and managed properly, most babies go on to live healthy, normal lives. Pediatric cardiologists are skilled at guiding families through this, especially when the condition persists beyond the first days of life.

So while PDA sounds concerning, it’s often just a temporary detour in a baby’s development—one that modern medicine knows how to handle with care.
