Are Microbial Mats Biofilms?

Yes—microbial mats are, in fact, a special type of biofilm. More precisely, they’re laminated biofilms, meaning they form layered structures that develop over time through the activity of diverse microorganisms. Unlike the thin, often invisible biofilms that coat everyday surfaces, microbial mats are complex, visible communities that can be studied with the naked eye or a simple microscope.

These mats are made up primarily of bacteria and archaea, the unseen majority that dominates life on Earth at the microscopic level. In some cases, they also include eukaryotic microbes like algae or protozoa, adding to their complexity. Each layer within the mat represents a unique microbial habitat, shaped by gradients of light, oxygen, and nutrients.
