Did We Exist in Heaven Before Birth?

It’s a question that often stirs deep curiosity: did we exist in heaven before we were born? The Bible offers clarity on one unique case—Jesus Christ. Scripture clearly affirms that Jesus existed with the Father before His earthly life. As Hebrews 7:3 notes, He is described as “without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life”—a portrayal pointing to His divine, eternal nature. He is the only one who came down from heaven, not just in spirit, but in divine essence.

But what about the rest of us? There is no biblical evidence that any human being existed alongside God in heaven before conception or birth. While Jesus’ pre-existence is a cornerstone of Christian faith, the same cannot be said for humanity. We are not eternal beings who once dwelled in heaven; rather, Scripture teaches that life begins at creation. Psalm 139 beautifully captures how God forms us in the womb, knitting us together with purpose and care. We are not returning to earth from a prior heavenly existence—we are newly formed, yet fearfully and wonderfully made.

Some traditions and philosophies suggest pre-existence of the soul, but that idea doesn’t find support in the biblical text. The Bible emphasizes our origin in God’s creative act, not a descent from a prior spiritual state. We are born once, live once, and face judgment once (Hebrews 9:27)—a sequence that underscores the sacred brevity of our earthly journey.

So while Jesus uniquely existed before His birth, we enter life as part of God’s ongoing work of creation. Our worth isn’t tied to a past in heaven, but to being known, loved, and formed by God in the present. Our existence is not ancient—but it is intentional.
