Can a Lung Transplant Cure Asbestosis?

There is no cure for asbestosis, a chronic lung disease caused by long-term asbestos exposure. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they embed in the lung tissue, leading to inflammation and scarring—a condition known as pulmonary fibrosis. Over time, this scarring stiffens the lungs, making it harder to breathe and reducing oxygen intake. While the disease is not cancerous like mesothelioma, its effects are permanent.

A lung transplant is currently the only treatment that may significantly improve quality of life and extend survival for people with advanced asbestosis. However, it’s important to understand that a transplant is not a cure. It replaces damaged lungs with healthy ones, which can relieve symptoms and restore some lung function, but it doesn't reverse the systemic impact of years of asbestos exposure or eliminate all risks associated with the disease.

Eligibility for a transplant depends on several factors, including age, overall health, the progression of lung damage, and the absence of other serious medical conditions. Because donor lungs are in short supply, the process is highly selective. Even after a successful transplant, patients must take lifelong immunosuppressive medications to prevent organ rejection, which come with their own risks and side effects.

While medical advances continue, early detection and prevention remain the best strategies. People with a history of asbestos exposure—especially those who worked in construction, shipbuilding, or manufacturing—should undergo regular lung screenings. Managing symptoms with oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and avoiding further lung irritants like smoking can also help maintain quality of life.

Though a lung transplant offers hope for some, it’s not a guaranteed solution. The reality is that the damage caused by asbestosis is irreversible, and treatment focuses on managing the disease, not curing it.
