Can Your iPhone Accidentally Call 911?

Yes, it can — and it happens more often than you might think. Many accidental 911 calls come from Apple devices, specifically due to a feature called Emergency SOS. On iPhones and Apple Watches, pressing the side button rapidly — five times in a row — triggers an automatic call to emergency services. It’s designed for real emergencies, but it can activate accidentally.

This often occurs when someone is adjusting the volume, trying to power the device off, or even pulling the phone out of a pocket. The action mimics the rapid button presses needed to launch Emergency SOS, especially if the phone is jostled or squeezed. Apple Watches are especially prone, as the gesture can be triggered by arm movements or misinterpreted taps.

When activated, the phone doesn’t just call — it also sends your location and notifies emergency contacts if configured. While this can be lifesaving in true emergencies, false alarms create extra work for already stretched emergency responders. Dispatchers often have to follow up to make sure no one is in danger.

Thankfully, there’s a safety window. After you press the button rapidly, a countdown begins on-screen, and you can cancel the call before it connects. But if you don’t act quickly, the call goes through. To avoid accidental dials, be mindful of how you handle your device — especially during physical activity or in tight spaces.

If you do trigger it by mistake, don’t hang up. Stay on the line and explain the situation to the dispatcher. Hanging up might prompt them to send help, assuming the worst. A quick apology is better than an unnecessary emergency response.
