Does Blood Type Influence Diabetes Risk?

It's a question many haven't thought to ask: can your blood type affect your chances of developing type 2 diabetes? Surprisingly, emerging research suggests there may be a link—though not in the way one might expect.

A recent study explored the connection between blood groups and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The findings revealed something intriguing: individuals with blood type B appeared more frequently among those diagnosed with T2DM, suggesting a higher susceptibility. In contrast, those with blood type O were less frequently diagnosed with the condition, hinting at a possible protective effect.

However, the data also showed no statistically significant association between blood types A and AB and the development of T2DM—meaning having type A or AB blood doesn’t appear to raise or lower diabetes risk in a meaningful way.

While this doesn’t mean blood type O guarantees lower risk, it does point to potential underlying biological mechanisms worth exploring. Some researchers believe differences in blood group antigens might influence inflammation, insulin resistance, or gut microbiota—all factors tied to metabolic health.

Still, experts caution against drawing firm conclusions based on blood type alone. Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and genetics play far more decisive roles in diabetes development. Blood type may contribute to the puzzle, but it’s only one small piece.

So, can blood type O individuals get diabetes? Absolutely. While the data suggest a slightly lower incidence in this group, no blood type offers complete immunity. The bottom line remains the same: regardless of whether you’re type O, A, B, or AB, a healthy lifestyle is your best defense against type 2 diabetes.
