The Path From Permanent Residency to Australian Citizenship
Earning your permanent residency (PR) is a major milestone, but for many migrants, the ultimate goal is becoming a full Australian citizen. Fortunately, the transition is straightforward once you meet the core residency requirements set by the government.
To be eligible to apply for citizenship, you generally need to have lived in Australia on a valid visa for a total of four years right before making your application. Within that four-year window, the most crucial rule is that you must have held your permanent residency for at least the last 12 months.
Keep in mind that timing isn't the only factor. The Department of Home Affairs also looks at your physical presence in the country, ensuring you haven't spent too much time traveling abroad. Specifically, you cannot have been out of Australia for more than 12 months in total across those four years, and no more than 90 days away during the final 12-month PR period.
Beyond the timeline, you'll also need to pass the Australian citizenship test, demonstrate a basic command of English, and prove that you plan to maintain a close and ongoing association with Australia. Once everything aligns, submitting that application is your final step toward officially calling Australia home for good.
