A tubal ligation, commonly known as having your tubes tied, is a highly effective form of permanent birth control. However, no method is completely foolproof. It is still technically possible to get pregnant even after undergoing this procedure, although it happens very rarely.

If a pregnancy does occur following a tubal ligation, it carries a significantly higher risk of being an ectopic pregnancy. Unlike a normal pregnancy where a fertilized egg travels and implants safely inside the uterus, an ectopic pregnancy happens when the egg implants outside of the main cavity of the womb, most frequently in one of the fallopian tubes.

Because fallopian tubes are not built to support a growing pregnancy, ectopic pregnancies require immediate medical attention. Anyone who suspects they might be pregnant after having their tubes tied—or who experiences symptoms like severe one-sided abdominal pain or unusual vaginal bleeding—should contact a healthcare provider or seek urgent medical evaluation right away.
