Metropolitan Police Uniform Rules: Can Officers Wear the Thin Blue Line Badge?

The Thin Blue Line badge has long been a recognizable symbol among law enforcement personnel, worn by many to show solidarity and honor fallen colleagues. However, the display of unauthorized emblems on official uniforms has been a topic of ongoing discussion regarding police neutrality and uniform standards.

Under current Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) policy, officers are not permitted to wear the Thin Blue Line badge while on duty. To maintain strict impartiality, professional appearance, and consistency across the force, police dress regulations restrict what emblems can be attached to official kit.

The MPS policy does, however, allow for a small number of specific exceptions. Officers are permitted to wear approved charity and remembrance items, specifically the official Police Memorial Day badge, the Royal British Legion poppy, and the Help for Heroes badge and wristband. Outside of these designated exceptions, officers must adhere to standard uniform guidelines without adding personal or non-sanctioned patches.
