Can Nuts Cause Acne?
When it comes to diet and skin health, the relationship isn't always straightforward—but certain foods, including some nuts, may influence acne in sensitive individuals. While most nuts are packed with healthy fats and nutrients that support overall well-being, peanuts can be a different story for those struggling with oily skin or frequent breakouts.
Despite often being grouped with tree nuts, peanuts are actually legumes, and they can affect hormone levels in a way that might aggravate acne. They contain compounds that may stimulate androgen activity, hormones that boost sebum production in the skin. When sebum—the oily substance secreted by sebaceous glands—builds up, it can clog pores and create an environment where acne thrives.
That doesn’t mean everyone should avoid peanuts. For people with balanced skin or no hormonal sensitivity, peanuts in moderation are unlikely to cause issues. But if you've noticed breakouts after snacking on peanut butter or salted peanuts, it might be worth reducing your intake and observing any changes.
Other nuts like almonds, walnuts, or cashews are generally less likely to trigger hormonal shifts and may even support clearer skin thanks to their antioxidant and omega-3 content. The key is individual response—acne is highly personal, influenced by genetics, hormones, and lifestyle.
So while peanuts aren't a direct cause of acne for everyone, they can contribute in those predisposed to oily skin or hormonal acne. Listening to your body and making mindful food choices may go a long way in achieving a clearer complexion.
