Does a Small PDA Close on Its Own?
Many newborns enter the world with a tiny opening in their heart called a patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA. This is a normal part of fetal circulation, allowing blood to bypass the lungs before birth. Once a baby starts breathing on their own, this passageway typically begins to close.
In most infants with an otherwise healthy heart, the PDA closes naturally within the first few days of life. The body recognizes the change in circulation and responds by tightening and shrinking the ductus. This is especially common in full-term babies, where the closure process often completes without any intervention.
However, if the PDA remains open beyond the first week or two, it can allow excess blood to flow into the lungs. This may lead to symptoms like fast breathing, difficulty feeding, or poor weight gain. Premature babies are more likely to have a persistent PDA, as their systems aren’t fully developed at birth.
Doctors closely monitor newborns, especially those born early, to see how the PDA progresses. In some cases, medication or a minimally invasive procedure may be needed to help close the opening. But in many full-term infants, nature takes its course—and the tiny passage seals shut without a problem.
Early detection and careful follow-up are key. Most babies with a small PDA go on to live completely normal, healthy lives, especially when the condition is managed appropriately. If your baby is diagnosed with a PDA, rest assured that many do close on their own—and medical support is available if needed.
