Where Does Water Go?

You’ve probably wondered if water ever truly disappears—like puddles drying up or rivers running low. The truth is, water doesn’t vanish. It just changes form. All the water on Earth has been here for billions of years, cycling endlessly through what scientists call the hydrologic cycle.

When the sun warms lakes, rivers, and oceans, water evaporates into the air as vapor. That moisture rises, cools, and condenses into clouds. Eventually, it falls back to Earth as rain or snow—what we call precipitation. Some of it soaks into the ground, recharging aquifers; some flows over the surface into streams and rivers; and some returns to the atmosphere through plants in a process called transpiration.

This constant movement means Earth isn’t getting new water, nor is it losing any. The same water molecules that once flowed through ancient rivers or quenched a dinosaur’s thirst could be in your glass today. It’s a closed system—water is endlessly recycled, never truly gone.

Yet despite this natural recycling, fresh water is surprisingly scarce. Over 97% of Earth’s water is in the oceans—too salty to drink or use for most crops. Less than 3% is fresh, and much of that is locked in glaciers or deep underground. What’s left available in lakes, rivers, and accessible aquifers is a tiny fraction.

So while water never disappears from the planet, clean, usable water can be hard to come by in the right place and time. That’s why protecting rivers, wetlands, and aquifers matters. The cycle keeps moving, but it’s up to us to ensure fresh water stays within reach—for people, wildlife, and future generations.
