Can You Fail an Assessment and Still Get the Job?

It’s a common concern: you’ve aced the application, impressed on paper, but then stumbled through a pre-employment assessment. Is the job still within reach? In most cases, the answer is no — failing a required assessment often means your application goes no further.

Many companies use these tests, especially skills-based ones, as a hard filter early in the hiring process. They’re designed to quickly sort through large applicant pools, measuring technical ability, cognitive skills, or personality traits relevant to the role. Because they’re often automated and scored objectively, there's little room for leniency. If you don’t meet the minimum benchmark, your resume likely won’t make it to a human recruiter.

This gatekeeping role is especially true for roles in tech, finance, or engineering, where precision and specific competencies are non-negotiable. A coding challenge, for example, might require a certain number of test cases to pass — anything less and the system flags it as a fail.

That said, not all assessments are created equal. Some companies use them more as a diagnostic tool rather than a strict cutoff. In rare cases, if the rest of your profile is exceptionally strong — say, you have rare experience or a referral from a senior leader — a hiring manager might review your results manually and consider exceptions. But these situations are the exception, not the rule.

The bottom line? Treat every pre-employment test as a make-or-break moment. Prepare thoroughly, practice sample questions, and approach it with the same seriousness as an interview. Because in many ways, it is — just without the human interaction.
