When it comes to biofilms—dense communities of bacteria encased in a protective matrix—the idea of "starving" them might seem logical. But the reality is more complex. While biofilms do experience internal starvation, it's not because of external food scarcity alone. Instead, it's a built-in consequence of their structure. As bacteria on the outer edges of the biofilm consume available nutrients, those deeper inside are left with less and less. Diffusion becomes a bottleneck—the slimy extracellular matrix that protects the colony also slows the passage of nutrients, leaving inner cells in a state of metabolic hibernation.
This starvation isn't just a survival challenge for the bacteria—it actually plays a key role in their notorious resistance to antibiotics. Dormant or slow-growing cells don't respond to drugs designed to attack rapidly dividing ones. That’s why traditional antibiotics often fail against biofilm infections, from chronic wounds to persistent urinary tract issues.
