Even then, the service life of plastic containers is limited to about 12 months. Over time, the chemical can degrade the plastic, increasing the risk of leaks or container failure.

Another critical factor is pressure build-up. Peracetic acid can decompose slowly, releasing gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide. That’s why storage packages are equipped with venting devices. Store peracetic acid in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and incompatible materials like strong acids, bases, or metals that could catalyze decomposition. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and consider secondary containment to manage spills.

While plastic is a practical option for short- to medium-term storage, never assume it’s a permanent solution. Beyond a year, even high-quality containers may no longer be reliable. For long-term or large-scale storage, some facilities opt for specialized materials like glass-lined steel or specific alloys, though these come with higher costs.
