Can Someone Tell If You’re Checking Their Location on Find My?

It’s a question that’s crossed the mind of many an iPhone user: Can someone know when I check their location on Find My? The short answer is no — at least not in most cases.

Apple designed the Find My app with privacy in mind. Simply viewing a friend’s or family member’s location within the app won’t trigger any alert on their device. If you’re sharing location with someone — say, your partner or a close friend — you can check in on their whereabouts without them ever knowing you did. There’s no log, no notification, no digital tap on the shoulder.

However, there is one important exception: Find Nearby. If you use this feature, which relies on Precision Finding (the same technology used with AirTags), the person you're trying to locate will be notified. This is a deliberate privacy safeguard. When Precision Finding activates, their iPhone or AirTag-enabled device emits a sound and displays a message, letting them know someone is attempting to locate them physically. This only happens when you're in close proximity and actively using the feature to find a lost device or person.

Outside of that specific scenario, casual checks on someone’s location remain private. That said, it’s always worth considering the trust and boundaries in any relationship where location sharing is involved. Just because you can check someone’s location doesn’t necessarily mean you should — especially without open communication.

In short: no notifications are sent when you view a shared location. But if you’re getting close enough to trigger Precision Finding, yes — they’ll know.
