Can Medication Close a PDA in Newborns?
When a premature baby is diagnosed with a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)—a persistent opening between two major blood vessels leading from the heart—doctors often turn to medication as a first-line treatment. This small but significant passage, which normally closes shortly after birth, can cause breathing difficulties and strain on the heart if left open in preterm infants.
Fortunately, in many cases, the PDA can be closed using common medications such as indomethacin, ibuprofen, or even paracetamol. These drugs work by promoting the closure of the duct through their effect on prostaglandins, substances in the body that keep the vessel open during fetal life.
Indomethacin is typically administered intravenously over a 36-hour period, while ibuprofen and paracetamol are given in a shorter course—usually over three days. These treatments are most effective in premature infants and are less commonly used in full-term babies, where PDAs may require other interventions.
After starting treatment, doctors closely monitor the baby’s condition and use follow-up echocardiograms (or “echo’s”) to assess how well the PDA is responding. These ultrasounds of the heart help determine whether the duct is narrowing or closed completely, guiding the next steps in care.
While not all PDAs close with medication, many do—avoiding the need for surgery or catheter-based procedures. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment significantly improve outcomes, allowing fragile newborns to stabilize and grow stronger. As with any medical decision in neonatal care, the choice of medication and timing depends on the infant’s overall health, gestational age, and severity of symptoms.
