How Long Can a YouTube Short Be?
You might have noticed that YouTube Shorts are usually quick, snappy clips—often under a minute. But here’s something many creators and viewers don’t realize: Shorts can actually be up to three minutes long.
Gone are the days when Shorts were strictly limited to 60 seconds. YouTube has expanded the maximum duration, allowing creators to upload videos of up to three minutes through both the YouTube mobile app and YouTube Studio. This change gives more breathing room for storytelling, tutorials, or any content that benefits from a little extra time—without losing the vertical, fast-paced format that defines Shorts.
That said, just because you *can* use three minutes doesn’t mean you always should. The strength of Shorts often lies in their brevity. Most viewers scroll quickly, so capturing attention in the first few seconds is still crucial. However, having the option to go longer means more creative flexibility—whether you're doing a mini recipe breakdown, a quick comedy sketch, or a step-by-step DIY tip.
It’s also worth noting that for a video to be classified and distributed as a Short, it must be uploaded vertically and be under three minutes. If it's longer, YouTube treats it as a regular video, even if it's only a few seconds over.
So yes, you can go up to 3 minutes—and sometimes, those extra seconds make all the difference. But the real key isn’t the clock—it’s what you do with the time you’ve got.
