Could Humans Live 1,000 Years?

It sounds like science fiction—humans living a millennium—but some scientists think it might not be as far-fetched as it once seemed. While the average lifespan today hovers around 70 to 90 years, depending on the country, advances in genetics, medicine, and biotechnology are beginning to challenge our understanding of aging.

Our bodies weren’t built to last forever. As we age, our cells accumulate damage: DNA mutates, cell division slows, and waste products from metabolic activity build up. These changes lead to the familiar signs of aging—and ultimately, disease. But what if we could slow, stop, or even reverse that process?

Researchers are already exploring ways to target the root causes of aging. Drugs that clear out “zombie” cells—those that stop dividing but refuse to die—are in trials. Gene editing tools like CRISPR offer the possibility to correct mutations before they cause harm. And scientists are studying animals like naked mole rats and certain whales, which show remarkable resistance to aging, for clues.

Some experts, like biogerontologist Aubrey de Grey, argue that with enough breakthroughs, humans could one day live 1,000 years. They call this concept “longevity escape velocity”—the idea that medical advances could extend life faster than time passes, pushing death further into the future.

Of course, living for centuries raises more than just scientific questions. What would society look like if people lived ten times longer? How would retirement, relationships, or careers change? And who would have access to such life-extending technologies?

While a 1,000-year lifespan remains speculative, the pursuit is already reshaping medicine. Whether or not we reach that thousand-year mark, one thing is clear: the way we think about aging is changing—and faster than ever.
