Did Usain Bolt Ever Run the 400m?
Long before he became the fastest man in history, a young Usain Bolt was already blazing trails on the track—just not always in the 100m or 200m we now associate with his legend. In fact, yes, Bolt did run the 400 metres, though it was early in his career and never became his signature event.
Back in 2001, at just 15 years old, Bolt competed in the CARIFTA Games—the premier youth track competition in the Caribbean. Representing Jamaica, he clocked a personal best of 48.28 seconds in the 400m, earning a silver medal. That same meet, he also took silver in the 200m with a time of 21.81 seconds. Impressive as it was, the 400m demanded a different kind of endurance that didn’t quite align with Bolt’s explosive speed and stride pattern.
Coaches quickly realized his true potential lay in shorter sprints. By his late teens, Bolt had transitioned fully to the 100m and 200m, where his combination of height, power, and form shattered records. Still, that early 400m performance remains a fascinating footnote—proof that even as a teenager, Bolt had rare athletic range.
Though he left the quarter-mile behind, that 48.28-second run in 2001 reminds us that greatness often starts with experimentation. Bolt may have sprinted away from the 400m, but it was part of the journey that shaped a champion.
