Do Europeans Carry Neanderthal DNA?

Yes, most Europeans—and many others outside of Africa—carry a small but significant amount of Neanderthal DNA. Scientists have found that people of European or Asian descent typically have about 1 to 2 percent of their DNA coming from Neanderthals, an ancient human species that lived in Eurasia for hundreds of thousands of years before going extinct around 40,000 years ago.

This genetic inheritance is the result of interbreeding between early Homo sapiens migrating out of Africa and Neanderthal populations they encountered in Europe and Western Asia roughly 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. These encounters left a lasting mark in the genomes of non-African populations today.

Interestingly, people with roots solely in sub-Saharan African populations generally have little to no Neanderthal DNA. This makes sense when you consider that Neanderthals never lived in most of Africa, so early humans who remained there didn’t have the opportunity to mix with them.

So why does this matter? Well, some of the genes we inherited from Neanderthals may have helped early humans adapt to new environments—like colder climates or different pathogens. But not all of it was beneficial. Some of these ancient genes have been linked to modern health issues, such as increased risk of certain autoimmune diseases or sensitivity to UV light.

Though 1 to 2 percent might sound small, it’s enough to influence traits we see today. The story of Neanderthal DNA is a powerful reminder that we’re not purely Homo sapiens—we’re a little more complex, a little more ancient, and deeply interconnected with the human relatives who came before us.
