Do Hydrogels Dissolve?

Hydrogels, those squishy, water-swollen networks found in everything from contact lenses to wound dressings, don’t all behave the same way when exposed to liquids. Whether a hydrogel dissolves depends largely on how it’s made.

There are two main types: physical and chemical hydrogels. Physical hydrogels are held together by weak interactions—like hydrogen bonds or van der Waals forces—between polymer chains. Because these bonds are fragile, physical hydrogels tend to dissolve easily, especially when heated or placed in solvents like water or alcohols. Temperature changes can disrupt the delicate balance holding them together, causing the gel to break apart and dissolve.

On the other hand, chemical hydrogels—also known as permanent hydrogels—form through covalent bonds between polymer chains. These bonds are strong and irreversible under normal conditions, making the gel highly stable. Unlike their physical counterparts, chemical hydrogels typically do not dissolve, even when exposed to heat or solvents. Instead, they swell while maintaining their structure, which is why they’re preferred for long-term medical implants or drug delivery systems.

So, while some hydrogels can dissolve under certain conditions, others remain intact thanks to their robust internal architecture. The key difference lies in the type of bonding: weak, reversible interactions versus strong, permanent crosslinks. Understanding this helps scientists design hydrogels tailored to specific needs—whether it’s a temporary scaffold for tissue growth or a durable matrix for sustained drug release.
