Leaving Canada? Don’t Forget to Notify the CRA
If you're planning to leave Canada permanently, one important step is to inform the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) of your departure date. This may not be the first thing on your mind while organizing an international move, but it’s crucial for avoiding confusion down the road.
When you officially leave Canada, your residency status for tax purposes changes. The CRA needs to know the exact date you cease to be a resident so they can update your file. Without this information, you might continue to receive benefits you’re no longer eligible for — or worse, face penalties later.
You’re generally no longer entitled to certain benefits once you become a non-resident. This includes the GST/HST credit and the Canada child benefit (CCB), as well as similar payments from provincial or territorial programs tied to the CCB. Continuing to receive these after leaving could result in debt or legal issues, since they’re only intended for Canadian residents.Notifying the CRA is straightforward. You can contact them directly or update your status through your tax return for the year you left. Be sure to include your departure date and any new address abroad. It’s also wise to file a final Canadian tax return for the year you leave, reporting worldwide income up to your departure date.
While the process may seem small, it’s a key part of closing your financial chapter in Canada responsibly. Whether you're moving for work, retirement, or a fresh start, taking a few minutes to inform the CRA can save you time, money, and stress in the future.
