Do Children with Progeria Have Teeth?
Children with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), commonly known as progeria, do develop teeth—but not in the usual way. While most kids begin sprouting their first teeth by their first birthday, children with progeria often experience a significant delay in tooth eruption and root formation. It's not that they lack teeth entirely; rather, the development process is slowed and altered due to the profound effects of the condition on growth and bone structure.
The underlying cause lies in the underdevelopment of the jaw and facial bones. In progeria, both the maxilla and mandible—upper and lower jawbones—are often smaller and positioned further back than typical, a feature referred to as retrognathia. This restricted jaw growth limits the space available for teeth to emerge, leading to delayed eruption and sometimes abnormal positioning when they do appear. These dental differences are not just cosmetic—they can affect chewing, speech development, and overall oral health.Researchers believe these dental delays are directly tied to the broader skeletal abnormalities seen in HGPS, which stem from a mutation in the LMNA gene. This gene produces a protein critical for maintaining the shape of the cell nucleus, and its malfunction disrupts normal tissue development, including in the bones and teeth. As a result, dental care for children with progeria often involves early and specialized intervention from pediatric dentists and orthodontists.
Though rare—occurring in about 1 in 20 million births—progeria offers valuable insights into aging and development. The dental challenges these children face highlight just how deeply the condition affects the body, even down to the timing and structure of something as seemingly simple as a first tooth.
