Rest Breaks on a 14-Hour Shift: What Are You Entitled To?
Working long shifts can be physically and mentally demanding, making regular breaks essential for maintaining focus, energy, and overall health. If you are facing a lengthy workday—such as a 14-hour shift—it is crucial to know your rights regarding rest periods during your schedule.
Labor guidelines and workplace policies typically scale rest periods based on the total number of hours worked. While shorter shifts of 2 to 6 hours usually require just one 10-minute rest break, longer hours significantly increase these entitlements. For shifts lasting between 6 and 10 hours, standard regulations generally mandate two 10-minute breaks.
As hours continue to accumulate, so do the required rest periods. If your shift spans over 10 hours but stays under 14 hours, you are entitled to three rest breaks. Once you reach the 14-hour mark—working between 14 and 18 hours—you qualify for four rest breaks throughout your shift, along with applicable meal periods mandated by local labor laws.
To ensure you are taking the proper rest, always check your local jurisdiction's employment standards and your specific workplace contract, as exact requirements and meal break additions can vary depending on where you work.
