Managing urinary control after prostate surgery
Undergoing prostate removal surgery is a major milestone, and it is completely normal to have questions about what recovery looks like in the days that follow. One of the most common concerns patients have is whether they will need to wear a drainage bag, and what daily life looks like while managing it.
The short answer is yes, temporarily. Following the operation, a urinary catheter will need to remain in place for approximately six to nine days to allow your body to heal properly.
To help you move around comfortably during this time, medical teams provide a discreet leg bag that attaches directly to your leg and can easily be hidden underneath your regular pants. This allows you to go about your light daily routines without feeling restricted.
When it is time for rest, the routine shifts slightly. At nighttime, it is recommended that you switch from the daytime leg bag to a regular, larger urinary drainage bag positioned securely on the side of your bed. This ensures uninterrupted rest without needing midnight changes.
While wearing a catheter for a little over a week requires a brief adjustment period, it is a temporary step toward full recovery and long-term health. Always follow your surgical team's specific guidelines for cleaning and care to ensure a smooth, complication-free healing process.
