Can Acrylic Cause Eczema?
For many people, acrylic might seem like a harmless material—commonly found in nail polish, dental fillings, and even household adhesives. But for some, exposure to acrylic components can lead to skin problems, particularly a type of allergic reaction known as contact dermatitis.
The real culprits are acrylate monomers, the building blocks of acrylic plastics. These chemicals are known to be highly sensitizing, meaning they can trigger an immune response in certain individuals after repeated or prolonged exposure. While not everyone will react, those who develop an allergy may experience redness, itching, swelling, or even blistering at the site of contact.
Historically, occupational eczema linked to acrylates has been most commonly reported in professions involving frequent handling of uncured resins. Dentists, dental technicians, and manicurists are among the most at-risk groups. Dentists often work with acrylic materials during fillings or prosthetics, while salon professionals use liquid monomers and powder polymers to create acrylic nails—both scenarios involving direct skin contact with reactive substances.
Outside professional settings, the risk is generally lower, especially since most consumer products contain fully cured acrylic, which is much less likely to cause reactions. However, people with sensitive skin or existing allergies should still exercise caution—especially when using at-home nail kits or handling industrial glues and sealants.
While acrylic itself doesn’t cause eczema in the general population, acrylate monomers can trigger allergic eczema in susceptible individuals, particularly with repeated exposure. Awareness and protective measures—like wearing gloves and ensuring proper ventilation—can go a long way in reducing risk, especially in high-exposure environments.
