Does Biochar Contain PAHs?

When discussing biochar, a growing number of researchers and farmers are drawn to its potential for carbon sequestration and soil enhancement. However, one critical question often arises: does biochar contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)? The answer is yes—biochar can contain PAHs, but the levels vary significantly depending on production methods and feedstock.

PAHs are organic compounds formed during incomplete combustion of organic materials. Since biochar is produced through pyrolysis—a process that involves heating biomass in low-oxygen conditions—the risk of PAH formation exists. Studies have shown that PAH concentrations in biochar can range from as low as 100 µg kg⁻¹ to as high as 100 mg kg⁻¹. In some cases, particularly with poorly controlled pyrolysis or contaminated feedstocks, the total concentration of the 16 US EPA-listed PAHs can reach several thousand mg kg⁻¹.

This variability underscores the importance of how and where biochar is made. Slow pyrolysis at moderate temperatures (around 400–600°C) tends to produce biochar with lower PAH levels, especially when clean, uncontaminated feedstocks like wood or crop residues are used. In contrast, high-temperature processes or the use of waste materials may increase PAH content, raising concerns about potential soil contamination and human health risks.

As interest in biochar grows, so does the need for quality standards. Not all biochar is created equal, and understanding the source and production process is key. Consumers and agricultural users should look for certified biochar products that disclose PAH levels and production methods. With responsible sourcing and manufacturing, biochar can remain a promising tool for sustainable land management—without the hidden cost of harmful pollutants.
