Does Ejaculation Help Keep the Prostate Healthy?
For years, men have wondered whether the frequency of ejaculation plays a role in prostate health. One large study sparked interest by suggesting a link: men who reported ejaculating at least 21 times per month had about a 20% lower risk of developing prostate cancer compared to those who ejaculated just 4 to 7 times a month. The study hinted at a trend—the more frequent the release, the lower the risk.
But science isn’t settled on this. While that particular finding made headlines, other research hasn’t found a clear connection between ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer rates. Some experts believe regular ejaculation might help flush out potentially harmful substances or reduce inflammation in the prostate, possibly offering a protective effect. Yet, these theories remain just that—theories—without strong, consistent evidence across multiple studies.
It’s also important to note that correlation doesn’t equal causation. Men who ejaculate more often may simply have healthier lifestyles overall—better diet, more physical activity, or more regular sexual activity, which can contribute to well-being in many ways. Prostate cancer is influenced by a mix of genetics, age, race, and environmental factors, and no single habit like ejaculation frequency is likely to override those.
So while the idea that frequent ejaculation could help protect the prostate is intriguing, it shouldn’t be seen as a guaranteed preventive measure. The best approach to prostate health still includes regular check-ups, especially for men over 50 or those with a family history of prostate issues. Staying informed and talking openly with your doctor matters more than counting monthly totals.
