How Humidity Affects Evaporation and Comfort

Contrary to what some might assume, evaporation does not increase with humidity—in fact, it's quite the opposite. High humidity actually slows down evaporation. When the air is already saturated with moisture, there’s less room for additional water vapor, making it harder for sweat to evaporate from our skin. This is why we often feel hotter on humid days, even if the temperature isn’t extremely high. Our body relies on evaporation to cool down, and when that process is hindered, we’re left feeling sticky and overheated.

On the flip side, low humidity can bring its own set of challenges. While it allows for faster evaporation—which can help us cool more efficiently—it can also dry out mucous membranes in our nose and throat. This dryness doesn’t just cause discomfort; it can weaken our body’s first line of defense, potentially increasing the risk of respiratory infections, especially in colder months when indoor heating further reduces humidity levels.

Nature balances these effects through dynamic weather patterns, but in our daily lives, awareness of humidity levels can help us stay comfortable and healthy. Using a humidifier in dry environments or staying in well-ventilated spaces during humid stretches can make a noticeable difference. Ultimately, it’s not just the temperature that matters—it’s how moisture in the air influences our body’s ability to regulate itself.
