Does Fake Leather Melt in the Sun?
It might sound surprising, but yes—under the right (or wrong) conditions, fake leather can actually melt when left in direct sunlight for extended periods. Unlike genuine leather, which is made from animal hides and can char or crack under intense heat but won’t melt, synthetic leather contains plastic-based materials like polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These components have a much lower tolerance for high temperatures.
When your car seats, outdoor furniture, or jacket made from faux leather sit in the blazing sun, especially during summer months, the surface temperature can soar well above 140°F (60°C). At that point, the plastic polymers in synthetic leather begin to soften and, in extreme cases, can deform or even melt slightly. This is particularly common in dark-colored items, which absorb more heat.
Real leather, on the other hand, behaves differently. While prolonged UV exposure can dry it out and lead to cracking over time, it won’t melt because it’s not composed of thermoplastic materials. Its natural fibers break down when overheated, but they don’t liquefy.
So, if you're storing or using products in hot, sunny environments—like a car dashboard or a patio chair—opting for genuine leather could offer better durability. But if you're sticking with faux leather, keeping it shaded or protected can prevent unsightly damage.
In short: real leather burns, but fake leather can melt—especially under the relentless summer sun.
