Chronic wounds are a persistent challenge, often resisting conventional treatments due to the presence of bacterial biofilms—protective layers that bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa build to shield themselves. These slimy fortresses make infections harder to treat, prolonging healing and increasing the risk of complications.
Interestingly, science is turning to a surprisingly old remedy: honey. Long valued for its natural antibacterial properties, honey is now being studied for its ability to disrupt these stubborn biofilms. Research has shown that when applied to pre-formed P. aeruginosa biofilms—common culprits in wound infections—honey at concentrations of 16% and 32% significantly reduces biofilm biomass.
This isn’t just a marginal effect. The reduction was statistically significant (p < 0.05), suggesting honey doesn't just sit on the surface—it actively undermines the biofilm's structure. While the exact mechanisms are still being explored, honey’s high osmolarity, low pH, and the presence of compounds like hydrogen peroxide and methylglyoxal likely contribute to its disruptive power.
What makes this especially promising is that honey appears effective even against established biofilms, not just free-floating bacteria. This means it could play a meaningful role in real-world wound care, where infections are already entrenched.
Of course, not all honeys are equal. Medical-grade varieties, such as Manuka honey, are typically used in clinical settings to ensure consistency and safety.
