How Humidity Affects Evaporation

Ever wonder why your clothes dry faster on some days than others, or why sweat soaks into your skin more slowly in sticky weather? The answer often lies in humidity.

Evaporation is the process by which liquid turns into vapor, and it’s heavily influenced by the moisture already in the air. When the air is dry—meaning it has low relative humidity—there’s plenty of room for more water vapor. This allows evaporation to happen quickly. That’s why a glass of water left out in arid conditions will disappear faster, or why your skin feels drier in winter when indoor heating reduces humidity.

On the flip side, when humidity is high, the air is already packed with water vapor. Since the atmosphere can only hold so much moisture, evaporation slows down. On muggy summer days, for example, you might notice that sweat doesn’t evaporate efficiently from your skin. That’s because the air is nearly saturated, reducing its ability to absorb more moisture. This is also why humid environments feel hotter—your body’s natural cooling system is less effective.

So, does humidity slow evaporation? Yes, absolutely. The more humid the air, the less capacity it has to take in additional water vapor, which means evaporation slows to a crawl. In contrast, dry conditions create the perfect environment for rapid evaporation.
