Does Salmon Contain PFAS?

When it comes to seafood and contaminants, many people are asking: does salmon contain PFAS? The answer isn’t a simple yes or no—it depends on the type and source of the fish.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seafood—both farmed and wild-caught—has been tested for PFAS, a group of synthetic chemicals often called “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and human body. The good news is that farmed salmon, like Atlantic salmon, typically shows low levels of PFAS. The same goes for other farmed species such as tilapia and shrimp, which are raised in controlled environments that can limit exposure to these pollutants.

However, the picture changes slightly with wild-caught fish. Species like tuna, cod, and clams tend to have higher PFAS levels, likely because they absorb contaminants from the water and food sources in their natural habitats. Since salmon can be both farmed and wild-caught, the PFAS content depends on how and where it was raised. Wild Pacific salmon, for example, may carry more PFAS than its farmed Atlantic counterpart, simply due to environmental exposure.

That said, the levels found in most seafood—including salmon—are still considered low and not an immediate health risk by regulatory standards. Still, it’s wise to be mindful of your overall diet, especially if you consume large amounts of seafood regularly. Choosing a mix of farmed and wild fish, while staying informed about sourcing, can help balance nutrition and minimize exposure.

For now, enjoying salmon in moderation—whether from the farm or the ocean—remains a healthy choice rich in omega-3s and protein, with PFAS levels that fall within acceptable safety limits.
