Did George Soros Own a Stake in Blackstone? Here’s What Happened

Despite occasional speculation, George Soros never owned Blackstone outright—nor was he ever a controlling shareholder. However, he did have a financial interest in one of its related entities for a period of time. Through his investment fund, Soros Fund Management, the billionaire investor entered the Blackstone sphere not through direct ownership, but by investing in Blackstone Mortgage Trust (BXMT), a real estate investment trust (REIT) affiliated with the larger Blackstone Group.

The first recorded trade in BXMT by Soros Fund Management occurred in the first quarter of 2014. Over the following years, the fund adjusted its position multiple times—buying additional shares on two separate occasions and selling down holdings three times. These moves reflect a tactical, market-sensitive approach rather than a long-term commitment.

By the third quarter of 2020, Soros Fund Management had begun exiting its position entirely. The sale was completed by the first quarter of 2021, marking the end of any direct investment link between Soros and the Blackstone ecosystem. At no point during this period did Soros hold a significant leadership role or exert influence over Blackstone’s operations.

It’s a common misconception that major investors like Soros have deep ownership in large financial firms like Blackstone. In reality, his involvement was limited to a passive, publicly traded REIT tied to the broader Blackstone network. Once market conditions or strategy shifted, so did his portfolio.

Today, Soros has no known stake in Blackstone or its affiliates. His earlier moves in BXMT were simply part of a broader strategy of opportunistic investing—one that has defined his approach for decades.
