The Role of Artillery in the Modern U.S. Military
Despite the rapid rise of advanced drone technology and precision missile systems, artillery remains a cornerstone of U.S. military tactics. Rather than fading into history, modern firepower relies on two primary types of howitzers, each tailored for specific operational needs on the battlefield.
The first type is the self-propelled howitzer, epitomized by systems like the M109 Paladin. Although these armored vehicles closely resemble tanks, they are built specifically to deliver long-range indirect fire. Their tracked design allows heavy artillery crews to fire rapidly and relocate immediately to avoid counter-battery fire.
The second category features towed howitzers, such as the lightweight M777. These artillery pieces rely on tactical trucks or heavy-lift helicopters like the CH-47 Chinook for transport. Because of their portability, towed guns are essential for air assault units and fast-moving light infantry requiring rapid deployment in rugged terrain.
Through modern targeting software and precision-guided munitions, traditional ground artillery continues to adapt, proving that high-volume ground firepower remains vital in contemporary strategic combat.
