Vitamin C May Help Disrupt Bacterial Biofilms
Emerging research suggests that vitamin C—best known for supporting immune health—could play a surprising role in fighting stubborn bacterial infections. A key challenge in treating such infections lies in biofilms, the slimy protective layers bacteria create to shield themselves from antibiotics and the immune system. These biofilms are held together by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), making them notoriously difficult to break down.
Interestingly, recent findings show that vitamin C, at concentrations up to 20 mM, can effectively interfere with biofilm formation. Rather than killing bacteria outright, it appears to disrupt the production of EPS—the very glue that holds the biofilm together. By inhibiting this matrix, vitamin C may prevent bacteria from establishing stable, resilient colonies.
This doesn’t mean taking more vitamin C will cure an infection outright, but it opens new doors for how we might use this common nutrient in clinical settings. Researchers are now exploring whether vitamin C could enhance the effectiveness of traditional antibiotics, particularly in chronic or hard-to-treat infections where biofilms are a major obstacle—such as in wound care, urinary tract infections, or even certain dental conditions.While most dietary intake of vitamin C won’t reach the concentrations used in these studies, the results highlight its potential as a supportive agent in antimicrobial strategies. Future therapies could involve localized delivery of high-dose vitamin C directly to infected tissues, bypassing the limitations of oral absorption.
Still, more research is needed to determine optimal dosing, delivery methods, and which types of bacteria are most vulnerable. But one thing is clear: vitamin C may be more than just a vitamin—it could be a valuable ally in the ongoing battle against resistant infections.
