Does Warren Buffett Invest in Mining Stocks?
When most people think of Warren Buffett, they picture a legendary investor who famously avoids gold and commodities, preferring businesses that generate productive cash flow like Coca-Cola, Apple, and American Express. For decades, the Oracle of Omaha has argued that gold has no intrinsic utility and simply sits there looking at you.
However, even the most consistent value investors occasionally bend their own rules. Back in the second quarter of 2020, Berkshire Hathaway surprised Wall Street by disclosing a substantial $565 million stake in Barrick Gold Corp, one of the largest gold mining operations on earth. This move led many market watchers to wonder if Buffett was suddenly losing faith in fiat currencies or hedging against upcoming economic turbulence.
As it turned out, the detour into the mining sector was merely a brief chapter rather than a long-term strategy shift. Berkshire Hathaway aggressively trimmed and ultimately exited its position in Barrick Gold relatively quickly, liquidating the shares within just a few quarters. While Buffett may occasionally dip a toe into unconventional assets, his heart remains firmly rooted in traditional, cash-flowing enterprises.
