Yes, water can evaporate at just 1 degree Celsius — and even below freezing, under the right conditions. While many people associate evaporation with warm temperatures or boiling, the reality is more nuanced. At standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm), water evaporates across a wide temperature range, from 0°C up to 100°C.

Evaporation is a surface phenomenon, meaning it happens when individual water molecules at the surface gain enough energy to break free into the air as vapor. This can occur at any temperature, even as low as 1°C. The process is simply slower in colder conditions because fewer molecules have sufficient kinetic energy to escape.

Think about clothes drying on a cold winter day — moisture still disappears, even if the air is below 10°C. That’s evaporation at work.
