According to Saqlain Raza, a Ph.D. student at North Carolina State University and lead author of a recent study, sunlight is “exceptionally good” at causing water to evaporate—often more efficient than heating water on a stove.

This energy allows them to break free from the liquid phase and become vapor more quickly. “People often think of boiling as the fastest way to remove water,” Raza explains, “but under the right conditions, direct sunlight can rival or even outperform that process—without the need for external fuel or equipment.”

Understanding how efficiently the sun drives evaporation can improve technologies like solar stills for clean water, agricultural irrigation planning, and even climate modeling.
