Does Wine Evaporate Faster Than Water?
It might seem like a simple question, but the answer reveals something fascinating about how wine behaves over time—especially in storage. While pure water evaporates at a certain rate, wine, which contains alcohol and other volatile compounds, can behave differently under varying conditions.
Contrary to what some might assume, wine doesn’t always evaporate faster than water. The rate depends heavily on the environment. In dry, well-ventilated spaces—like a warm, airy shed—evaporation speeds up significantly. This is especially true for wine in barrels, where the porous wood allows for what’s known as the “angel’s share”: gradual evaporation that vintners accept as part of aging. However, in cooler, more humid, and sheltered environments, evaporation slows down, preserving more of the liquid inside.
Here's an interesting twist: in very dry conditions, it’s actually the alcohol in wine that tends to evaporate more readily than water. Since ethanol is more volatile, it escapes faster, subtly altering the wine’s composition over time. This can lead to a slightly more concentrated blend—not stronger in alcohol, but richer in flavor as the water content remains relatively higher.
So while wine doesn’t universally evaporate quicker than water, its components respond differently to the air around them. Humidity, temperature, and airflow all play key roles. For winemakers and collectors alike, understanding these subtle dynamics helps in preserving quality and character—proving that sometimes, losing a little can mean gaining a lot in complexity.
