Donald Trump's Charitable Giving and Foundation History
Questions about Donald Trump's personal philanthropy often center on the operations of the Donald J. Trump Foundation, established in 1987. Originally created to distribute proceeds from his bestselling book, the private foundation served as his primary charitable vehicle for over two decades.
Financial records show that between 1987 and 2006, Trump personally contributed $5.4 million to the foundation. By the end of 2006, those funds had been fully spent on various grant awards to non-profit organizations, medical research, and civic groups.
However, his direct financial support shifted dramatically after that period. Over 2007 and 2008 combined, he contributed a total of $65,000 in personal funds, with his final payment being $35,000 in 2008.
Following 2008, Trump stopped donating personal funds to the charity entirely. Instead, the foundation continued issuing grants through contributions collected from third-party donors and corporate partners until its eventual closure in 2018.
