How Sperm Survive and Travel Inside a Woman’s Body
After ejaculation, millions of sperm begin a remarkable journey through the female reproductive tract. But how do they survive the acidic environment of the vagina and make it to the egg? One key player is cervical mucus. Around ovulation, this mucus becomes thin, stretchy, and alkaline—creating a protective, nurturing environment that acts like a reservoir, allowing sperm to survive for up to five days inside the cervix.
Once inside the uterus, sperm are not just drifting aimlessly. Uterine contractions, often triggered by orgasm or natural muscle movements, help propel them upward toward the fallopian tubes. These contractions act like gentle waves, guiding sperm through the uterus and into the narrow pathways where fertilization can occur.
Surprisingly, the first sperm to reach the fallopian tubes within minutes of ejaculation are usually not the ones that fertilize the egg. They may be too immature or not fully capacitated—meaning they haven’t undergone the biochemical changes needed to penetrate the egg. Instead, the sperm that succeed are often those that have rested, matured, and waited in the reproductive tract, sometimes for days, until the egg is released.
