How Your iPhone Can Help Detect Hidden Trackers

If you're concerned about someone tracking your movements without permission, your iPhone has built-in tools that can help—no extra apps needed. Apple designed these features to give you peace of mind by alerting you to unknown trackers that might be following you.

Here’s how to enable the detection system on your iPhone:

Start by opening Settings, then head to Privacy & Security and tap Location Services. Make sure it’s turned on, then scroll down to System Services and ensure Find My iPhone is enabled. This is key—it allows your device to participate in Apple’s network-based tracking detection.

Next, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn it on. Bluetooth is essential because most small tracking devices, like AirTags or third-party tags, use Bluetooth signals to communicate. Keeping Bluetooth active (it uses minimal battery) lets your phone detect these signals in the background.

Finally, navigate to Settings > Notifications, and scroll all the way down to Tracking Notifications. Toggle on Allow Notifications. Once enabled, your iPhone will alert you if it detects an unfamiliar tracking device moving with you—say, an AirTag that doesn’t belong to you. This often happens in scenarios like leaving a bag in a taxi or, more seriously, if someone places a tracker in your belongings without consent.

These steps are simple but powerful. Apple’s ecosystem works silently to protect your privacy, using anonymized, encrypted data so no one—including Apple—can see your location. It’s a smart layer of digital security in a world where personal privacy matters more than ever.
