How Common Is PDA in Newborns?

Patent Ductus Arteriosus, or PDA, is more than just a medical term—it’s a reality for many premature babies. In healthy newborns, a small blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus naturally closes shortly after birth. But in some infants, especially those born early, it stays open. This condition is what doctors refer to as PDA.

While PDA can occur in full-term babies, it’s significantly more common in preterm infants. Studies show it affects about 65% of babies born before the 28th week of pregnancy. The earlier a baby is born, the less developed their organs—including the heart and lungs—so the ductus is less likely to close on its own. This can lead to breathing difficulties, heart strain, and poor growth if not managed properly.

The exact reasons why PDA develops aren’t always clear, but prematurity is by far the biggest risk factor. During fetal development, the ductus arteriosus plays a vital role by allowing blood to bypass the lungs. After birth, when the baby starts breathing air, this vessel should shut down. In preterm infants, however, the transition doesn’t always happen smoothly. Hormonal imbalances, underdeveloped tissue, and even genetic factors can interfere with closure.

Thankfully, modern neonatal care has effective treatments. Doctors may monitor mild cases closely, as some PDAs close on their own over time. Others may require medications like ibuprofen or indomethacin to encourage closure. In more serious cases, minimally invasive procedures or surgery may be needed.

While PDA can sound alarming, especially for parents of tiny preemies, many infants respond well to treatment and go on to thrive. With early detection and proper care, outcomes are often positive—another reminder of how far neonatal medicine has come.
