Calling a UK number from overseas

If you are trying to reach someone in the UK from abroad—such as from Australia—getting the dialling sequence right is essential to make sure your call goes through smoothly.

To connect from an Australian landline or mobile, the standard format is 0011 + 44 + area code + 8-digit local number. Notice that you always drop the initial zero from the UK local or area code when dialling internationally. For example, if a London number starts with 020, you would dial 0011 44 20 followed by the rest of the number.

When calling a UK mobile phone specifically, the process is very similar. If you are dialling from an overseas mobile, you will still need to include the international prefix and the UK country code (+44), while dropping the leading zero of the mobile number. Many modern mobile phones also let you simply hold down the zero key to type a + sign, making it easy to dial +44 directly followed by the mobile number.
