When you cross into the afternoon and evening hours—ranging from 1300 to 2359—you just need to subtract 12 from the hour digits, then finish it off by adding PM. If you are looking at 1700, taking 12 away from 17 leaves you with 5, turning the time into 5:00 PM.

Finally, keep two specific edge cases in mind to avoid any mix-ups: 1200 stands for noon, written as 12:00 PM, while 0000 represents midnight, which translates to 12:00 AM at the start of a brand new day.
