How to Find Your SA302 Tax Calculation

If you're self-employed or need to prove your income for a mortgage or loan, you’ve probably been asked for an SA302 tax calculation. This document, issued by HMRC, summarizes your taxable income for a given year and is often required by banks or lenders. Getting it isn’t complicated—if you know where to look.

Start by logging into your HMRC online account. Make sure you’re signed in with your Government Gateway credentials. Once inside, navigate to the Self Assessment section. This is where all your tax filings and documents are stored.

Next, look for the option that says ‘Get SA302 Tax Calculation for tax year 20xx to 20xx’—just select the relevant year. Clicking this will take you to your official tax calculation. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you’ll see a link that says ‘View and print your calculation’. Click it, and your full SA302 will appear.

From there, you can review, download, or print the document. It typically includes four pages: the overview of your tax bill, a breakdown of income, allowable expenses, and any tax reliefs. Most lenders accept the first page, but it’s wise to keep the full set just in case.

If you’ve never filed a Self Assessment before, you’ll need to register with HMRC first—this can take a few weeks, so don’t leave it until the last minute. Also, remember that you can only generate an SA302 once your Self Assessment has been submitted and processed, so make sure your tax return is up to date.

Once you have it, keep a copy saved securely. You never know when you might need it again.
